New Newsletter Format — 'The Spill': 3 Small Inbox Ideas for Creatives
Learn, Make, and Discover. Yayoi Kusama's wink, a one-minute doodle prompt, and a small dose of beauty from 'Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.'
1. Learn — from the artist Kusama: “wink and giggle”
Yayoi Kusama’s polka‑dotted universe reminds us that even infinity can giggle back.
In 1966, the great contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama set hundreds of mirrored balls outside the Venice Biennale with a cheeky sign reading, “Your Narcissism for Sale.” This installation — Narcissus Garden — was both playful and searingly honest, her early way of reflecting how we see ourselves in art and in the world.
“Humor is just truth, only faster!” — Gilda Radner
This week: find the humor in your creative life and wink at it. See how you can add some humor to your creative work.
2. Make — “doodle more, think less”
- Grab anything to write with — a pen, marker, pencil — and a piece of paper.
- Put on a song. (My favorite Spotify Percussion playlist is great for this.)
- Choose an easy shape you can draw and repeat. (Example: a triangle.)
- Start drawing for 1–2 minutes continuously. Don’t stop. Keep repeating the shape: bigger, smaller, overlapped — no judgment. Just let it flow and let it go.
- Reflect — how did this make you feel?
3. Discover — Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)
A movie about courage, reinvention, and late‑blooming beauty. (94% on Rotten Tomatoes.)
I adored and got totally energized after seeing Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. It gave me a powerful dose of creative Encore‑art inspiration — exactly the type of motivation and connection I needed.
“It’s about as pretty and heartwarming as you can imagine.” — RogerEbert.com
It’s also filmed gorgeously, enveloped in stunning color and Dior glamour — all inspired by true Dior fashion and facts. I encourage you to stream this and give yourself a little beauty and joy.
Love, Eliz
